The new music ensemble of the Bournemouth Orchestra, I founded Kokoro in the ‘90s. By its second season Kokoro had performances booked at the Cheltenham International Music Festival and had held residencies at Dartington College and The Anvil, Basingstoke.

Founding Conductor since its inauguration in 2006 and in association with the MPO this orchestra meets 4 times a year in camps ranging from 7 to 21 days. With MPYO I have commissioned Malaysian composers annually and toured East Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.

A wonderful experience working with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for consecutive seasons and a select group of emerging Australian composers that included recordings for the ABC. ACOF became the inspiration for the MPO Forum – see below.

Working alongside Richard Tognetti, ACO’s residency in Kuala Lumpur included a side by side performance with the MPO. The series of concerts included works such as Ginastera’s ‘Glosses sobre temes de Pau Casals’.

Thirty composers and over fifty works for orchestra and chamber ensembles, this was a three-year cycle that ended with one Malaysian competing against the world as part of the MPO International Composers Award.

Generating Enrichment through Music Awareness: Gema (Malay for ‘echo’) - a team of musicians dedicated to music education, who designed a bespoke series of school residencies for state schools in Kuala Lumpur who themselves hosted weekly visits by a mixed quartet of MPO and national musicians with rhythm, movement and singing at the core of the curriculum.
